Tethered on a rope, a mandrill reaches for the camera, Lvindo River, Gabon, 2000
"Tomo, our chief of logistics, had seen the orphan in a hunting camp that he surveyed. We stopped our canoes for just a few minutes and I photographed. The little guy was starved for affection and is putting his hand over my camera lens. He probably died or was eaten in a few days. Leaving an animal like this never sits right with me. I have faced this many times over the years, but I don’t feel it’s my role to intervene directly." –Michael Nichols
