Blue-throated Hummingbird, Southwestern Research Station, Chiricahua Mountains, Arizona, May 1959 [Lampornis clemenciae]; May 1959; Dye imbibition print; Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, Texas

Like the master Ornithological artist John James Audubon, Porter prided himself on creating animated, carefully composed close-up portraits of birds in characteristic poses. While he photographed most birds at their nests, he often photographed hummingbirds against single-color backdrops to better isolate them in space.
