Snake River in the Teton Range, 1942.

This photograph could be considered the quintessentially American landscape photograph. Images from this overlook vantage point have become cliché, but Ansel's is the classic composition that inspired them all. His mastery of the black and white exposure, development, and printing ensured the the print, though lacking color, deliver the emotions he felt while witnessing this majestic scene. The trees in the foreground are grown now, obscuring the sinuous line of the river and thereby making any present-day renditions almost pointless in comparison.
